BRONZE ELEGANCE is a University of Michigan fashion organization, sponsored by the Multicultural Youth Striving To Incorporate Cohesiveness (MYSTIC) Council of Alice Lloyd Residence Hall, built to promote self-expression through individuality, style, and culture. Our mission is to break down societal stereotypes with an annual show, in which, all proceeds will go to a charitable cause and participating students are given the opportunity to display our campus diversity to the public. Through our many representations of different shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and backgrounds, we hope to show that beauty has no standard and that it is not a necessity to conform to the norms of society.

BACKGROUND

In the winter of 1978, Bronze Elegance established its first multicultural fashion show created by the multicultural council of Alice Lloyd Residence Hall, MYSTIC. Throughout the 70's, the University of Michigan faced many racial discriminatory acts and injustices against minority students, which prompted Bronze Elegance to make a difference on campus. Founded under the principle of cultural expression through entertainment, design, creativity, and fashion, Bronze Elegance aimed to develop a united safe environment for students on campus regardless of different backgrounds and social inequalities.  Instead of only accepting students who belonged to the majority or accepting only those of a minority group, they chose models that exhibited and possessed different cultures, sizes, religions, sexual orientations, etc. The Bronze Elegance Fashion Show has now become an annual event to celebrate the beauty of diversity on the University of Michigan campus and is the most anticipated, action packed fashion show of the year. We strive to incorporate fashion with theatrical elements and cultural diversity to educate the community on the importance of intercultural bonding.
